What about HIV and tattoos?

According to the National Health Department and the Center for Disease Control, to date no known cases of HIV has ever been transmitted through a tattoo needle.

FACT:

It takes 100 micro liters (about ten drops) of blood of intra-muscular distribution to contract the virus. Tattoos do not go that deep into the skin. Tattoos are applied intra-dermal, which means they puncture the first couple layers of skin.

Can I get a disease?

Not in a licensed studio that practices proper cleansing and sterilization techniques.

I follow all the "Universal Precautions," laws, statutes and health codes. All needles, tubes & supplies are single-use and disposable.

How do I know if this studio is right for me?

Since most states now regulate tattooing, update to date studios are at least fairly clean. Make sure when you are comparing studios that you ask questions concerning the cleanliness. A good studio usually is happy to answer your questions in detail. The studio should be open to explaining what you don’t understand if you have questions. When you feel that you are getting the run around, it's probably best to move on.

Things to consider when comparing studios:

-Does the artist place protective poly bags on all tattoo equipment and application surfaces?

-Does the artist change his/her gloves frequently to avoid blood borne pathogen contact?

-Is the tattooist an artist also?
-Does the tattooist have art work that he/she has done that are not tattoos?
-Have you met other customers from that studio and have asked about their level of satisfaction?
-Is the staff and/or the artist courteous?
-What is your gut feeling about the place? Listen to your instincts.

Does it hurt?

Every persons tolerance of discomfort is different and the different areas of the body being tattooed can also have a different sensation.

Do you use new needles every time?

YES!!!!

Do you have photos of your work?

Yes!

Can I see the autoclave?

Yes.

What is an autoclave?:

Tattoo studios in Wisconsin are required to have an autoclave on location.

An autoclave is what doctors and dentists use for steam heat sterilizing. Since autoclaves vary in make, model size and manufacturers specification, it is hard to say exactly what to look for in actual specs.

Going to a tattoo studio should be a fun, safe and memorable experience. The room where you get your tattoo should feel like a more colorful version of the doctor's offices. It's your body and your safety.
